#5-Language & Multilingual Responses

Learn how Novus AI handles multilingual conversations, automatically understands the language used by members, and generates natural responses for communities with users from different regions.

Language & Multilingual Responses

Novus AI is designed to support Discord communities with members who communicate in different languages.

The assistant can understand multilingual conversations and generate responses based on the language used by the member, allowing communities to provide AI-powered support without creating a completely separate assistant for every language.

How Language Detection Works

When a member sends a message, the configured AI model analyzes the message and determines the language being used.

Novus AI can then generate its response in the appropriate language while continuing to follow your AI Instructions, Knowledge Base, and AI Routing configuration.

In most situations, members do not need to manually select their language before asking a question.

Responding in the Member's Language

For multilingual communities, you can instruct Novus AI to respond using the same language as the member.

For example:

Member: How can I create an account?

Novus AI can respond in English.

Member: Paano ako makakagawa ng account?

Novus AI can respond naturally in Filipino.

The same AI configuration and Knowledge Base can still be used even when members ask questions using different languages.

Mixed-Language Conversations

Some communities commonly use more than one language within the same message.

For example, a member may combine English and Filipino in a single conversation.

Modern AI models can often understand these mixed-language messages and respond naturally using a similar communication style.

If your community frequently communicates this way, you can include this preference in your general AI Instructions.

Knowledge Base Language

Your Knowledge Base does not necessarily need a separate copy of every article for every language your community uses.

Novus AI can use relevant Knowledge Base information when generating a response in another language, depending on the capabilities of your selected AI model.

For example, information stored in English may still be used to answer a member asking a question in Filipino.

However, important names, commands, channel references, product names, technical terms, and other values that should remain exact should be written clearly in your Knowledge Base.

AI Instructions and Language

You can define your preferred multilingual behavior through your AI Instructions.

For example:

Respond naturally using the language used by the member. If the member uses mixed English and Filipino, you may respond naturally using the same mixed-language style when appropriate.

You may also configure a preferred default language for situations where the member's language cannot be determined clearly.

AI Model Capabilities

Multilingual performance depends partly on the AI model you select.

Different models may have different levels of proficiency when handling:

  • English

  • Filipino

  • Indonesian

  • Portuguese

  • Other languages

  • Mixed-language conversations

  • Informal expressions

  • Regional terminology

If multilingual support is important to your community, test your selected model using the languages commonly used by your members.

Preserve Important Information

When responding in another language, certain information should normally remain unchanged.

Examples include:

  • Discord channel mentions

  • Discord role mentions

  • User mentions

  • Commands

  • URLs

  • Account identifiers

  • Product or service names

  • Proper names

  • Technical values

Your AI Instructions can specify that these values should not be translated or modified.

Test Multilingual Responses

Before deploying your assistant to a multilingual community, test common questions in the languages your members use.

For example, ask the same Knowledge Base question in several languages and verify that the important information remains consistent.

Check whether:

  • The question is understood correctly.

  • The response uses the appropriate language.

  • Knowledge Base information remains accurate.

  • Important names and values are preserved.

  • AI Routing still selects the correct route.

  • Fallback behavior works correctly.

Language Switching During a Conversation

A member may change languages during the same conversation.

Novus AI can adapt its response based on the latest message and available conversation context.

For example, a conversation may begin in English and later continue in Filipino.

The assistant can adjust accordingly without requiring the member to restart the conversation.

Multilingual Responses vs. Auto Translation

Multilingual AI responses and Auto Translation are different features.

Multilingual Responses allow Novus AI to understand a member's question and answer that member in an appropriate language.

Auto Translation is designed to translate or mirror Discord conversations between configured language channels.

You do not need Auto Translation simply to allow members to ask Novus AI questions in different languages.

Auto Translation is useful when you want conversations between members to be translated across designated Discord channels.

Improving Multilingual Results

For better multilingual responses:

  1. Use clear and accurate Knowledge Base information.

  2. Choose an AI model with good multilingual capabilities.

  3. Define your language behavior in your AI Instructions.

  4. Keep important names and technical values clearly formatted.

  5. Test the languages commonly used by your community.

  6. Review responses after changing AI models.

Next Step

Multilingual support helps Novus AI communicate with more members, but there will still be situations where the assistant does not have enough information to provide an accurate answer.

The next step is defining what the assistant should do in those situations.
